RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2019
Bringing Home the Gold!
The RHS Chelsea Flower Show is one of the most popular and prestigious annual garden design shows in the UK. It has been held almost every year since 1913 in the grounds of the Royal Hospital Chelsea. This year, the show was sponsored by M&G Investments and featured hundreds of exhibitors showcasing the latest and most innovative horticultural trends.
Of all of the beautiful gardens exhibited at the show, there are only a handful of medal winners. We are thrilled to reveal that a garden that was designed and built by one of our trained Resin Bound contractors, Jody Lidgard of Bespoke Outdoor Spaces, was awarded a gold medal in the “Space to Grow Gardens” category!
The Montessori Centre International (MCI) sponsored the award winning garden. They provide training to those interested in applying Montessori principles to early years’ education. Bespoke Outdoor Spaces worked alongside MCI to design a garden that reflected their teaching principles: child-led and future-driven. The finished result was an engaging garden which taught children about the natural world while also looking to the future of horticulture by incorporating modern technology. Features included a greenhouse inspired by the “Walipini” design – a sunken Victorian greenhouse – and a multi-coloured cabin, set among living and edible walls. The cabin showcased “hydroponic technology” and had many activities for children to get involved in, including a wildlife dipping pond.
A lot of careful thought went into the details of this garden. Lidgard explained that one of the main focuses was to “demonstrate the many methods of growing in small spaces that are accessible to children” and also to “teach them about the natural world … allowing them to explore horticulture in their own way”.
How were we involved?
This colourful cabin was where our BoundWorx® Resin Bound materials were showcased. We supplied just over 30m2 of our Elite Range 6mm Ivory finish which perfectly complemented the natural and vibrant feel of the garden.
Installation proved a challenge at first when it decided to pour down with rain – typical London! – but the skies cleared for the following day and the materials went down beautifully. The permeable, smooth surface was perfect for little running feet as the kids explored all the flowers and fun activities.
Well done Jody and all the team at Bespoke Outdoor Spaces for creating such a brilliant and well thought out exhibit!
